Festival To Celebrate Oscar Winner Sidney Poitier, Producer Walter Mirisch, Director Norman Jewison, Actress Lee Grant and Composer Quincy Jones

Turner Classic Movies (TCM) will kick off the 8th annual TCM Classic Film Festival on Thursday, April 6th with a 50th anniversary screening of the Sidney Poitier and Rod Steiger classic In the Heat of the Night (1967).

The iconic actor Sidney Poitier, who will attend the screening, broke stereotypes and new ground when he starred in this five time Academy Award winner about a black detective from the north who finds himself investigating a murder in a small-town in Mississippi.

Producer Walter Mirisch and Director Norman Jewison along with actress Lee Grant and composer Quincy Jones will be on hand to discuss the film which is considered to be a landmark.

The TCM Classic Film Festival will be held in Hollywood, Calif., from April 6 through April 9thj, 2017. This year’s theme is “Make ‘Em Laugh: Comedy in the Movies.”

SXSW programming ranges from independent films by new filmmakers to Hollywood comedies and genre standouts. As the 2017 festival draws closer, some of the themes this year need to be highlighted. Here’s a sampling of some exciting, upcoming films with LGBTQ themes!

Divine Divas

(Brazil) (North American Premiere) Director: Leandra Leal, Screenwriters: Carol Benjamin, Leandra Leal, Lucas Paraizo, Natara Ney

Eight iconic characters from the first generation of transvestite artists in Brazil challenged the moral of a country at the height of a rigid military dictatorship, in the 1960s, when they used to perform a show called Divinas Divas. One of the first stages to feature men dressed as women was the Rival theatre, run by Americo Leal, the director’s grandfather. Through archival footage and recent interviews, the documentary observes their 50-year careers on stage in different dimensions, leading us to understand these lives as a work of art, but also as a political act, struggling for human rights and individual freedoms in Brazil of yesterday and today.

During nine days of the SXSW Film Festival, 125 features will screen, with additional titles yet to be announced. The full lineup includes a whopping 84 World Premieres, 11 North American Premieres, and 6 US Premieres. First-time filmmakers account for 51 films.

Song To Song, from celebrated director Terrence Malick will make its World Premiere Friday March 10, 2017, as the Opening Night film for the 24th edition of the SXSW Film Festival. Rooney Mara, Ryan Gosling, Michael Fassbender, and Natalie Portman star in this modern love story set against the Austin, Texas music scene, as two entangled couples chase success through a rock ‘n’ roll landscape of seduction and betrayal.

Moonlight nabs Best Picture Oscar

Barry Jenkins’ epic, coming-of-age drama about a young boy growing up in Miami took home the Best Picture Oscar for 2017. Moonlight had been nominated for eight Oscars receiving two other Oscars for Best Supporting Actor by Mahershala Ali and Best Adapted Screenplay.

In what seemed to be one of the biggest gaffes in Oscar history, Warren Beatty opened the $200 red envelope, slowly scanned it and then handed it over to Faye Dunaway to read. After mumbling about Mr. Beatty being impossible, Dunaway blurted out “La La Land.” The La La Land troupe hugged making their way onstage while the film’s producers took turns thanking their wives for their inspiration and support with a minor onstage commotion taking place surrounding the red envelope. Quickly, La La Land producer Jordan Horowitz announced Moonlight was the winner. And that it was no joke.

Not wasting a moment, Barry Jenkins took the microphone and started in on how unreal the moment seemed as the La La Land team made its way offstage clearing the way for Moonlight to shine.

NOMINATIONS VOTING PROCESS

Regular awards are presented for outstanding individual or collective film achievements in a wide variety of categories. Most categories are nominated by the members of the corresponding branch–actors nominate actors, film editors nominate film editors, etc. However, certain categories such as Foreign Language Film and Animated Feature Film have special voting rules which can be viewed at our Rules & Eligibility page.

All voting members are eligible to select the Best Picture nominees.

Nominations voting is conducted using both paper and online ballots, with online voting being the preferred choice for the overwhelming majority of Academy members.  Voting for nominations begins in late December, and all votes are tabulated by PricewaterhouseCoopers.

Nomination results are then announced at a live televised press conference in mid-January at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.

Final Balloting Process

Finals voting is also conducted via online and paper ballots.

During finals, all Oscar categories are on the ballot for voting members.

After final ballots are tabulated, only two partners of PricewaterhouseCoopers know the results until the famous envelopes are opened onstage during the Oscars telecast.

Bill Paxton: Filmmaking always my dream (2005)

Veteran Hollywood Actor Bill Paxton has passed away at the age of 61 following “complications from surgery,” in a statement released by a family representative.

Paxton was nominated four times for the Golden Globe as an actor in 1999, 2007, 2008 and 2010. He was also nominated for a Primetime Emmy in 2012

In 2003, he won The Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films, USA Filmmaker’s Showcase Award. The award notes are as follows:

“Bill Paxton is one of the most respected actors working today. Following a long string of successful performances, Bill has stepped behind the camera and proven his skill as a director. His directorial debut, Frailty (2001), showed a keen sense of style and a powerful grasp of storytelling which puts him in the ranks of top directors working today. We feel compelled to acknowledge this masterful work.”

Also included is a clip of Mr. Paxton expressing his admiration and respect for master filmmaker and actor icon, Clint Eastwood.

Actor Bill Paxton tells Larry King that being a filmmaker was always his dream.

 

Thank you for some very memorable roles in films such as Nightcrawler, Twister, True Lies, Terminator, Titanic, Aliens, Predator 2 and Weird Science.

Rest in peace Bill Paxton.
