World Premiere of Django to Open the Berlinale 2017

On February 9, 2017, the 67th Berlin International Film Festival will open with the world premiere of Etienne Comar’s directorial debut: Django.

Django will participate in the official competition of the Berlinale.The French film revolves around Django Reinhardt, the famous guitarist and composer, and his flight from German-occupied Paris in 1943. Within moments, this superb guitarist was able to reach people’s hearts with his instrument. Yet as Sinti, his family was harassed and hounded by the Nazis.

“Django Reinhardt was one of the most brilliant pioneers of European jazz and the father of Gypsy Swing. Django grippingly portrays one chapter in the musician’s eventful life and is a poignant tale of survival. Constant danger, flight and the atrocities committed against his family could not make him stop playing,” says Berlinale Director Dieter Kosslick.

Director Etienne Comar has already made a name for himself as a screenwriter and producer – Of Gods and Men, Haute Cuisine, My King – and co-producer – The Women on the 6th Floor, Timbuktu.

For Django, Comar’s first work as a director, he cast actor Reda Kateb (Far from Men) in the title role. Starring alongside him are Cécile de France (The Kid with a Bike), as well as Alex Brendemühl and Ulrich Brandhoff.

The screenplay is written by Etienne Comar and Alexis Salatko. Django Reinhardt’s music was re-recorded for the film by the famous Dutch jazz band Rosenberg Trio.

The film is produced by Fidélité, Arches Films and Pathé. Pathé International will be handling international sales.

The “Berlinale Africa Hub” – a new EFM platform for innovation and technology in the African film industry

Thanks to the support of the German Federal Foreign Office, for the first time the 2017 Berlinale will provide a platform for innovative projects and ideas from the African film industry. The “Berlinale Africa Hub” is an initiative of the European Film Market (EFM) in cooperation with the World Cinema Fund (and the special programme it created in 2016, WCF Africa, which promotes films from Sub-Saharan Africa with the support of the German Federal Foreign Office), with Berlinale Talents (and its sister programme Talents Durban, which supports talented African filmmakers throughout the year), and with the Berlinale Co-Production Market.

Berlinale-As Festival Director Dieter Kosslick says, “The Berlinale has long-standing relationships with numerous African filmmakers, and has fostered the film industry in Africa in a variety of ways. Now, due to the support of the German Federal Foreign Office, with the ‘Berlinale Africa Hub’ we can substantially intensify that commitment. The new platform at the European Film Market will bring the next generation of African filmmakers to Berlin and offer an international forum for current technology, ideas, and developments in the African film industry”.

EFM Director Matthijs Wouter Knol says, “Apart from functioning as a place for African2015_0017_img_fix_173x1731 filmmakers to meet up with the international film industry, the ‘Berlinale Africa Hub’ is focused first and foremost on changes in the industry triggered by innovations and technology. The “Berlinale Africa Hub” is a communication and networking platform for the African film industry and all EFM participants who want to know more about new distribution and marketing models, and virtual reality and 360° projects by African filmmakers and producers, about successful start-ups that are bringing audio-visual content to the African market, and about African VOD and SVOD platforms that have emerged in the last few years.

As part of the Hub, there will be networking events, featuring discussions of the most important issues in sales, distribution, marketing, project packaging, co-production, subsidies, and talent development in the African industry.

Among the participants and partners of the “Berlinale Africa Hub” are companies like the non-profit organization Electric South from Cape Town, the pan-African online platform Mokolo, Rushlake Media from Cologne, and the Goethe-Institut.

Electric South provides funding, mentoring, training, and start-up help for digital storytelling – for African audio-visual projects of any kind, from long or short films to documentaries, interactive productions, virtual reality, or mobile content.

The pan-African online platform Mokolo, headquartered in Lagos, is directed both at audiences and at professionals in the AV and IT industries. It offers distribution, information, and networking possibilities.

Cologne’s Rushlake Media (RLM) is a film sales and distribution company focused on digital content and the African market. RLM supports producers, rights holders and institutions with successful marketing strategies in the changing film distribution landscape.

The Goethe-Institut is the co-producer of Electric South’s virtual reality initiative New Dimensions, and was instrumental in launching the Mokolo web portal in 2011.

The “Berlinale Africa Hub” will be headquartered in Gropius Park, the new compound that surrounds the historical Martin Gropius Bau, the main venue for the EFM.

Kicking off Awards Season, the 28th Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival (PSIFF) Film Awards Gala was held Monday, January 2, 2017 at the Palm Springs Convention Center hosted by Mary Hart.  Honorees were presented with an original Chihuly Glass Sculpture designed by Dale Chihuly or the John Kennedy “The Entertainer” statue.  The presenting sponsor of the Film Awards Gala is Chopard and major sponsors are Entertainment Tonight and Mercedes-Benz.

The Palm Springs International Film Festival Film Awards Gala honors individuals in the entertainment industry with several prestigious awards for acting and directing.  The following awards were presented at this year’s Film Awards Gala:

In the first two-hour episode, directed by van Sant, we follow the stories of the young Arizonian Cleve Jones (Guy Pearce), who would become a major LGBT activist working alongside Harvey Milk; the gay, African American, Vietnam vet Ken Jones (Michael Kenneth Williams), who has to contend with both the straight world’s homophobia and racism within the gay community; and the initially closeted women’s right activist from Boston, Roma Guy (Mary-Louise Parker). All their lives are transformed when they arrive in 1960s San Francisco, where the sexual revolution is in full bloom, even as the politicians and police desperately try to purge the city of its “deviant” citizens.

64th Pula Film Festival

Pula Film Festival is the oldest film festival in Croatia and one of the oldest film festivals in Europe. Its trademark is the Arena, where the film screenings take place under the stars. Today it is the most visited cultural event in the Republic of Croatia, with over 73,000 visitors attending the great number of festival events. The festival program takes place at different city locations, attracting a large number of visitors.

The competition program includes Croatian films, both feature and short films, usually premieres at the festival, as well as international program, children’s program, youth program, retrospective program and Pula Cinematheque. The accompanying sidebar program consists of programs for film professionals, film workshops, different exhibitions dedicated to cinematography and concerts. The jury awards the main festival prize – Grand Golden Arena for Best Festival Film. The Golden Arena is also awarded for the best director, screenplay, actor and actress, supporting actor and actress, DOP, editing, music, scenography and costume design. Another official festival award is also Octavian awarded by the Croatian Society of Film Critics (HDFK), and the Golden Gate of Pula, an award based on audience votes for films screened in the Arena.

Largest Croatian Film Distributor Moves Headquarters to Malta

Rivals are accusing Blitz of profiting from state aid.

Blitz, the leading Croatian distributor and exhibitor of films, has moved its headquarters to Malta and has become a part of the Hero Holdings Limited offshore company, reports Večernji List on January 2, 2017.

The holding includes, in addition to Blitz, companies Duplicato Media and Vox Communications. According to the Blitz-Cinestar, a company whose headquarters have remained in Croatia, the reason for the creation of “the holding is company’s internal reorganization of the group in order to facilitate expansion to other European markets; the owner of the holding company remains Hrvoje Krstulović.”

They add that Malta had been selected since it is a member of the European Union and has developed financial and other services related to the film industry, with English as the official language and acceptable costs of doing business.

This fact is not irrelevant because Blitz, which dominates with Croatian film distribution market, last year had revenues in the amount of 126 million kuna and profits of 45 million kuna, making it the most profitable of all of Krstulović’s companies. Vox Communications had a profit of 1.3 million kuna, Duplicato Media about 22 million kuna, while Blitz-Cinestar last year brought about 18 million kuna.

The new corporate structure, according to Blitz-Cinestar, will combine the shares in all of members of the group, which will improve management and operations on different markets and facilitate access to the international capital markets.

While Blitz-Cinestar claims that the move to Malta is not taxable and that all of their operating companies with 269 employees regularly pay all taxes (just since 2010, they have paid more than 59.5 million kuna of corporate taxes in Croatia), its competitors, small film exhibition companies which wished to remain anonymous, claim that Krstulović’s companies generate huge profits due to substantial state aid which is not available to any other economic sector in Croatia.

“Until 2014, there was no VAT for cinema tickets, and he sells 90 percent of all cinema tickets and distributes 90 percent of all films”, claim Krstulović’s opponents, claiming that Blitz-Cinestar stood behind the campaign against tax reform which called for an increase in the VAT rate for cinema tickets from 5 to 13 percent. The plans were ultimately abandoned.

Blitz-Cinestar denies the charges and claims that companies in the group are not entitled to state aid, with the exception to those programmes which are available to other companies as well. “In addition, it should be in common interest of all film exhibitors that the VAT on cinema tickets is not increased, since higher tax rate would have a negative impact on everybody,” says the company.

According to business data, Blitz-Cinestar did not pay any corporate taxes starting from 2012. “Blitz-Cinestar did not have to pay the tax for a limited period based on the applicable tax regulations. We have qualified for the tax break due to investments in the amount of 157 million kuna. We have created a total of 140 new jobs and saved all the existing ones,” concludes the company.

The 60th Annual San Francisco International Film Festival

SAN FRANCISCO—The 60th annual San Francisco International Film Festival will be held April 5, 2017 through April 19, 2017. The festival was created and facilitated by the San Francisco Film Society (SFFS).

The venues hosting this coming year’s festival include the Alamo Drafthouse, the Castro Theatre, the Roxie Theater, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Victoria Theatre, and the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. BAMPFA in East Bay will also house part of the film festival.

“The Festival combines a range of marquee premieres, international competitions, compelling documentaries, new media work, musical performances and star-studded events,” states the SFFS website.

The 2016 festival included 252 film screenings of 183 different films from almost 50 countries. There were more than 300 filmmakers and industry affiliates who made appearances, coming from different parts of the world for the event.

All submitted films had to be completed on or after the first day of the 2016 calendar year. Only films that had not been previously broadcasted or exposed at any other festival were considered. Those in the Bay Area community were eligible for an additional category of awards to support and celebrate independent and local works. The filmmakers chosen for the 60th festival screenings will be notified in March 2017.

A new dawn in Kollywood?

Kollywood is looking for a bright and better 2017, as the industry has undergone a sea change in 2016. All aspects of Tamil film making —funding, distribution, marketing, exhibition, promotions and political climate — have gone through a metamorphosis. Demonetisation and the resulting lack of finance is making producers uneasy.

Last week, the single biggest deal was made for a forthcoming festival film’s most lucrative distribution territory. The deal between the distributor and the production house was done through their bank accounts via RTGS (Real Time Gross Settlement) instead of the usual practice of paying cash. The distributor had told theatres willing to pay advance, and in some cases MGs (Minimum Guarantee), for this big hero film, to route it via banks, and made it clear that he will not accept cash payments. The deal went off smoothly, with the distributor bragging that he didn’t even visit the producer’s office to transfer the amount.

A leading financier says, “Demonetisation and the number of raids that followed have ensured that producers settle their financiers in cashless transactions via cheques, RTGS, NEFT etc. Now, financiers are wary of funding films based on its negative rights. We need to know their financial background and if they will be able to pay via banks at the time of settlement before going forward.”

One of the lessons Kollywood learnt in 2016 is the importance of marketing and promotions in the success of a film. Films which were torn apart by critics, like Kabali, Remo and others, went on to become hits, based on their marketing, with influential local distributors getting them wide releases.

Today, top stars visit popular screens in suburbs and small towns at the time of their film’s release. Dhanush’s visit to Tirunelveli Ram Muthuram for Kodi promotions resulted in huge collections for the film at that screen, and it featured at number four among the theatre’s top 10 collecting films of 2016.

The number of shows a screen allocates to a film too has become a barometer. At the same time, more than half the films suffer as theatres don’t give prime slots. The trouble is that theatres in the State have found alternative content, which is far more lucrative than Tamil films. Last year, the Tamil dubbed versions of The Jungle Book, The Conjuring 2, M.S.Dhoni: The Untold Story and Dangal did better business than certain straight Tamil hits. These four dubbed films will easily walk into the top ten collecting films of 2016 from Tamil Nadu theatricals based on ROI.

Last week, some screens in Chengalpet area on Monday cut down the number of shows of new Tamil films released for Christmas on Friday and replaced them with Dangal!

It is clear that Tamil films that don’t open well during the weekend are today dumped, without even informing the distributor. Earlier, even if a film flops, it would survive a week, with the same number of shows given at the time of release. Theatres across Tamil Nadu are now finding it better to go for online ticketing, which brings them extra money via service charges. This has created a situation where online booking, especially in Chennai city and Chengalpet areas, will determine the number of shows allotted for a film.

The myth of so-called “low-class masala entertainers” performing better in B and C markets has also been blown away. 2017 will see a more unified box-office performance market across the State, which means that producers can’t make meaningless potboilers and say it is meant for a particular section of the audience. Non-big hero films are now in a process of cost-cutting, with production managers being pulled up and asked to reduce the number of shooting days. Directors, especially newcomers, have been told to bring down the number of scenes, with the final edited copy not exceeding 140 minutes.

As satellite prices are no longer attractive for small and medium films, producers are trying to explore digital platforms. The new team, which will take over the Tamil Film Producers Council in the first week of February, has their job cut out. A lot has been written about piracy eating into collections as technology improves, with many new films being uploaded on Facebook on the release day itself. Hence, the window between a theatrical and digital release will have to come down drastically this year. Tamil cinema producers and actors should realise that budget is the key to box-office success. The Tamil Nadu government should also implement the High Court order to increase ticket prices, which have not been modified for the last 10 years. Hopefully, Kollywood will see a new beginning this year.
